* Listing examples “有” + the use of a dot to list things |
On the contrary, when we are listing some of the examples or all of the examples, we have to use the word “有” in |
For example: 香港有名的宗教場所有黃大仙、寶蓮寺、清真寺和天主教堂等。
|
When we want to give a few examples, we will use three dots “ …” or “ so on” in English to help us. However, we will use six dot “……” or “等” to leave out examples that we do not want to mention in Chinese. |
For the Punctuation mark, there are difference between Chinese and English. From the above example, we use comma to separate items in a series in English. However, we use a dot(、) to separate items in a series in Chinese. The last item in a series is usually preceded by a conjunction. They are “and” or “or” in English and “和” or “或” in Chinese. |
The use of punctuation mark in Chinese is quite complicated. So far, we have learnt two punctuation marks. The first one is dot (、) to list things. The other is a “full stop”. In Chinese, the full stop is like a small circle (。). It is used when the whole idea is finished. |
